A God-Sighting in New England

ONE OF MY FAVORITE passages is Matthew 13. In this passage, Jesus tells eight parables of what the kingdom of God is like. They often begin with the introductory phrase, “The kingdom of heaven is like . . .”

So, what is it like?  What is the kingdom of heaven like?

One of the big lessons I have learned through these parables is that sometimes the kingdom of heaven doesn’t seem like much. In other words, it doesn’t seem overly visible or overly present. At times, it seems small or quiet or not very present at all.

But the assurance that Jesus gives us is that even when it seems like it is not much more than “a mustard seed” or a “little bit of leaven” it is very much active and present.  In other words, God is at work whether you see it or not. That we can be sure of.

Perhaps we resonate with these parables because we live in a very secular part of the country.  The fastest growing group in New England is the “Nones.” The largest percentage of people who don’t affiliate with any religious belief are in New England. For example, Vermont and New Hampshire have as many as 35% of the population who have no religious affiliation at all.

And yet, we keep hearing news of a “quiet revival” taking place in New England. Or, to put it in the words of Matthew 13, “The kingdom of heaven is like...” What is it like? It is like what God is doing in New England!

Here is an article I came across recently that should encourage you.

It should encourage you to pray for New England and it should encourage you to live as someone who is “sent.”

God is using people like you and me for gospel influence in this region of the country. God is using churches like WEFC for gospel influence in this region of the country.

He put another parable before them saying, “The kingdom of heaven is like a grain of mustard seed that a man took and sowed in a field.  It is the smallest of all seeds, but when it has grown it is larger than all the garden plants and becomes a tree, so that the birds of the air come and make nests in its branches.”

He told them another parable, “The kingdom of heaven is like leaven that a woman took and hid in three measures of flour, till it was all leavened.”  Matthew 13:31-33
