Donate Shoes for Orphan Souls

I RECEIVED A TELEPHONE CALL recently from the Station Manager at WIHS 104.9 Christian Radio in Middletown. He told me about an initiative between the radio station and Buckner International out of Dallas, TX, whereby new shoes and socks would be collected and donated to orphaned and disadvantaged children throughout the United States and around the world. He asked if I would be willing to make phone calls to churches throughout Connecticut and Massachusetts to see if they would like to participate in a spring shoe drive. I am so pleased that WEFC is one of the many churches that chose to partner with WIHS and Buckner Shoes for Orphan Souls to assist with this Christian outreach ministry.

Founded in 1879, Buckner International is a Christ-centered, global ministry dedicated to providing holistic ministries for children, families and seniors in need. Its humanitarian outreach is awe inspiring, and I was particularly struck with the stories of children who live in extreme poverty and lack the most basic of needs. Shoes for Orphan Souls is the largest benevolent project of Buckner International, and since 1999, has donated over 3 million pair of new athletic/canvas shoes to children all over the world.

Why new shoes? Because most of the children that are served through this ministry have never owned anything new, especially a new pair of shoes. To quote Buckner International, “shoes demonstrate worth and God’s love to orphans and vulnerable children; shoes connect families to critical services, ministry and mentoring at the Buckner Family Hope Centers within their communities; shoes protect against disease and infection; and shoes lower barriers to school attendance”. This touched my heart, and I hope that it touches yours.

Please pray for this charitable organization and its countless volunteers as they humbly serve God. If you would like to donate a new pair of children’s athletic/canvas shoes or socks, there is a large box set up in the lower hallway near the Missions TV and bulletin board. Questions can be directed to me via or at 860.944.2398.

Shoes will be collected at WEFC through Sunday, June 3rd and will be delivered to WIHS radio during its Open House celebration between 10 am – 2 pm, Saturday, June 9th. All are welcome to visit the radio station during the Open House, where you can meet the on-air broadcasters, as well as tour the station facility. All shoes and socks collected from the participating churches will be shipped directly from the radio station to Texas. WIHS will be collecting shoes and socks at its location at 1933 South Main Street, Middletown, CT until June 15th.
